Steve Kitchin, chair of Marine Industry Training and Education Council (MITEC) will welcome attendees.

Council members will provide an update on current projects, including:

10:30 - 12:00 Workshops / Follow-up on COMITT 2008 Discussions

Attendees will have a choice of three workshops, each one based on one of these topics, identified at COMITT 2008:

  • Availability of New Workers (Education, External Awareness, and Recruiting) - Speakers: Barry Acker (The Landing School), Stacey Palmer (Maine Marine Trades Association), Ed Lofgren (3A Marine Services). Moderator: Ann Avary (Skagit Valley College)
  • Worker Competence (In-House Training, Standards, and Internal Awareness) - Speakers: Ed Sherman (ABCY); Bart van den Bosch (Rulefinder). Moderator: Tom Marhevko (NMMA)
  • Employee Retention (Leadership and Leadership Development, Organization Design and Development) - Speaker: Valerie Ziebron (Yamaha Marine University). Moderator: James Mills (Yamaha Marine Group)

1:30 to 4:30 Seminars and Workshops

New Workers

  • 1:30 to 3:00 - Facilitating Troubleshooting through the Use of Technology. Speakers: Sean Prendergast (NCMARTEC), Tim Quigley (MarineWright). Moderator: Roger Hellyar-Brook (The Landing School)
  • 3:00 to 4:30 - New Workers: How will we find and attract them? Speakers: Thad Foote (Shake-a-Leg Foundation);Ed Sherman (ABYC); Steve Kitchin (NEIT). Moderator: Ed Lofgren (3A Marine Services)

Worker Competence

  • 1:30 to 3:00 - In-house Training. Speakers: Valerie Ziebron, Yamaha Marine University); Greg McLaughlin (Revenge Advanced Composites). Moderator: James Mills (Yamaha Marine Group)
  • 3:00 to 4:30 - Training the Trainer. Speakers: Audrey Boucher (Massasoit); Chris Bannister (NEIT). Moderator: Greg Eck (Yanmar Marine USA)

Retention

  • 1:30 to 4:30 - "Team Building" Workshop. Facilitator: David Veech (Institute for Lean Systems) Moderator: Pam Lendzion (Marine Tec Management Company)

COMITT attendees will have free admittance to the IBEX trade show floor, which will open on Monday, October 6, at 10:00 a.m., and run until Wednesday, October 8, at 4:00. Attendees must, however, register with IBEX for additional seminars, including the six topics being produced by MITEC.
